'99 Tahoe, 2WD, 4DR, shock recommendations

I have a '99 4dr, 2wd Hoe that is at 106K and is losing the ride that I liked so much. I believe that it needs new shocks. First, what technique do you use to determine if shocks are worn out, and second, what make/model of shock has worked for you? The Bilstein (BE5-2670/BE5-2672) appears to be the OEM equivalent, but have any of you tried something else that you've been happy or disappointed with? This is a street only vehicle, and I have been known to tow a boat or two, with the factory towing package. I don't want to pull stumps and I enjoy the highway ride this vehicle once had.

I've got a 2002 Hoe.....54K....I've still got a pretty good ride, but I'm getting ready to drop new tires on her. Figured I'd drop in new shocks soon. Mfg's recommend 50K replacement....sounds like yours is over due. Nissan is using Bilstein on their Off road trucks and SUV's....I think you'd be happy with them. I'm looking at the Edelbrock.... check them out: http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/ias_shocks.html

I have a set of Edelbrock's used for less than a month for the Tahoe if you are looking for a great deal. They are sitting in my garage. I use load range E firestone steeltex tires inflated to 50 lbs. The Edelbrock's specifically say that you have to use factory inflation recommendations only. My tires were too bouncy with the Edelbrocks so I went with Rancho's, which have a stiffer ride and are built to handle the extra load from higher inflation pressures. [email protected]
