Re: starter help

Staters on all 3.8 engines are relatively easy. Some, the rearward (inside) bolt can be a pita to line up. Some people say they had to remove their manifold pipe, I've never had to. Only other suggestion/tip: there is a main wiring harness right under the starter on the topside of the crossmember, don't drop the starter on it unless you want to add to the electrical gremlins these cars already have.

Re: starter help

MY CAPS BUTTON STUCK!

The worst-case scenario;
Just continue to carry a big hammer and "rap" it when it doesn’t work! In the not too distant future, it will get tired of being "rapped" and will just refuse to do any more work!! Then you can get a new one.

The best-case scenario;
The first time it had to be rapped with a hammer, pick up a new starter (while the car is still running, do not turn it off) and drive it to the closest shop to be installed. It is not difficult to install with the right combination of tools.

Then you can leave your hammer at home in the tool shed.

Re: starter help

No, 2 are a must. Most models you have to remove the flexplate (flywheel) cover to get the inner bolt.

Re: starter help

there is a black plastic cover between the engine and transaxle that covers the flexplate to protect it. there s/b like four 8mm screws holding it up, remove it and you will see the other bolt.

Re: starter help

CAPS BUTTON IS THE CAPS LOCK, MUCH LIKE YELLING!! OR OVER EXCLAIMING!!!!!! It's above the left shift key. Your left knuckle may cover it if you are touch typing. The handle of the beer mug may obscure it if you are a two-fisted-two-fingered typist. Remove screw??? or simply press and be sure the green light that says "Caps Lock" is off. I type better than I wrench, but did have my starter replaced on a 95 PA. Put the hammer down?

Re: Re: Re: starter help

Well It's done, took 3 hrs from start to finish, part of the reason it took so long is that I have parkinsons disease, and my right hand is almost useless, and my index finger just had 6 stiches last week, I have to admit I thought it would be harder than it was, just cuz iit is packed in pretty tight. I only had 1 screw left and it went in the top hole of the flywheel sheild no big deal, so get this I paid 169.00 for the starter w/ a 30 dollar core chg, I get the job done before the store closed and was returning the core and the kid tells me that I have to wait a week before I can return it to get my money back cuz I wrote a check and it needs to clear first, I guess what people do is write a bad check,and rreturn the core before the check bounces, thanks to these a-holes I get to wait now, I just wish they would have told me this when I bought it anyway THANKS TO ALL WHO RESPONDED YOU REALLY HELPED ME

Re: starter help

You are my hero! With all the complications you have, you did it yourself!! Wow, what an inspiration.

What a beautiful place you live! I worked in St Cloud, Melrose, and Albany back in the 80's on special assignment. They always sent me there in the winter, however one of the assignments lasted until August, so I could see the summer in Minnesota. It was a memory, I will never forget, except for the mosquitoes! I would love to have a summer place up there, but in the winter, I would have to go south.

Sorry to here you have check swindlers up there nowadays, when I was up there, it was the only place in the Nation that I felt safe leaving my windows down in my car and the keys in the ignition. You could even leave windows open in the house and the doors unlocked. I guess the derelicts are living every where now!!
