'98 Stratus oil light

I have a '98 Stratus ES w/2.5 v-6.The other day, with no warning, the oil light came on and the motor stalled out. There was no abnormal noises in the motor at the time of stall. The motor turns over, but will not start. The oil light remains on. I had a mechanic look at it, and he wanted to replace the entire disributor.
Any advice?

Why does the mechanic think it's the distributor. If i'm not mistaken, that engine will not run unless the PCM sees oil pressure first. So, if your oil pressure sending unit was bad, it wouldn't provide a signal to the computer to turn on the fuel pump. In short, have the oil pressure sensor tested/replaced.

I don't have a clue why he wanted to replace the destributor. He also added that the spark plugs where soaked in oil. Total estament with valve cover seals, plugs, whole distributor, and labor $1,000.00

Re: '98 Stratus oil light

I'm not sure if your mechanic knows that the distributor has nothing to do with the oil pressure or not. The oil pump is driven by the (GASP!!) timing belt, which could've broke. This would cause no oil pressure and no spark. Timing belts are supposed to be changed every 60,000 miles......but no one ever does. Have your mechanic check the belt before spending that much money. An easy way to tell is to connect an oil pressure gauge in the place of the oil pressure sender, crank the engine and observe the guage. There should be a little pressure while the engine is cranking. If there is pressure, the timing belt is good, but the oil sending unit may be bad. If there's no pressure, the timing belt may have broke. Your vehicle also has an "Automatic Shutdown Relay" Which should be tested.

By the way it has 138,000 miles and the timing belt has not been changed.

The testing part would be fairly easy, but the belt change will be difficult, requiring some special tools, quite a bit of tools, and a cool head. I have the intructions and some photos if you would like, i can e-mail them to you, because it's too much to put on this board.

Re: '98 Stratus oil light

I have the same exact car and my oil light has been on for nearly a year and my husband said everything was fine??? So goes someone who ignores little things that turn into big ones. Anyway I dont know much about cars so ill just tell you what problems ive had with mine and where im at today with it.

Ive had isuues with A/C not cooling( recharged it last summer and this summer),

overheating (radiator leaked ??) fixed that after nearly a year. Hubby said something about a bolt braking off???

my ignition has been loose for 2 years ( I can take the key out while motor is running, if it is not line up just so my battery will be dead in a matter of hours. If i hear the 3 beeps enables the alarm sytem, then i know its off)

Now i have encountered fuel pump failure. Hubby replace it and three weeks later my ignition problem ran my battery dead like it does on a regular basis. I charged it up got it started, ran some errons and it began to struggle when i started it up. started fine a couple times but gradually completely failed. Now the new fuel pump is out.

I think the problem isnt my fuel pump but something in the wiring. Like i said i dont know much about cars. Hubby insists it a bad pump and refuses to look into anything im suggesting??
