Quote from Haynes manual, "On 1990 and earlier models, with the exception of models equipped with a V6 engine, a special tool (Chrysler DRB-ll or equivalent) is needed to access the self-diagnosis system."

98 is obd2 so not completly sure but on my 93 you just turn the ignition to on (not start) and back off i think five times and then the cel flashes certain sequenses to tell you the codes

on the 89 and 90 jeeps the DRBII will display fault codes for these
two years. 91 thru 95 Jeeps you can use snapon scanner. 96 and up
is OBDII and you can buy these code scanners cheap.

Re: trouble code retreival

I got an OBDII scanner on eBay for $44 (including S&H). Works great and can reset MIL.

Doesn't work on my '88. But the earlier XJ's don't store codes, the connectors are set up for "run time" diags. The FSM gives you the pin outs that you can test with a meter.

Re: trouble code retreival

all cars from 1996 and older are all obd2. If they still made the yougo, and it was a 1996, it would as well have a obd2.

You must have meant 96 and "newer".
