89 Dynasty Heater Core

I'm trying to help my son-in-law out on this one. Anyone here ever replace the heater core on an '89 Dynasty ? We've removed 5 nuts from the studs holding in the heater / ac assembly box & can't seem to find anymore but this thing won't budge. What are we missing ? They all came out from under the hood, two on top, two lower down & one to the passenger side. It wiggles but won't really move, seems to be held in somewhere else in the middle. ?????????????????? Thanks.

Re: 89 Dynasty Heater Core

well, it won't go anymore unless you pull out the entire dash.

I dug out a Haynes manual on Dynasty and you really have your work cut out for you. You have to discharge the air conditioning system, remove the blower motor, remove the relay panel above the glove compartment opening, through the glove compartment opening disconnect the air conditioning vacuum line connector and the radio noise capacitor connectors.

These instructions go on for a while, resulting with the unit on your bench for repairs.

Unless you have coolant all over the place, why are you doing this?

I can get you the rest of the instructions if you want to complete the job. Let me know.

Completed !

Yes, this job was a PITA but it's now complete. Thank you to all who replied. Actually, once we figured out what we were doing it wasn't too bad. FYI, disconnect vacum lines & electrical connectors, the glove box comes out, the steel brace under the dash comes out, the radio out, then four nuts on the firewall under the hood & the ac connection on the firewall. AC didn't work anyway & didn't have a charge. After these things are off, it takes a little strong arming & manuvering to get the box out. The blower motor comes out still attached to the box. The biggest problem we had was figuring out exactly what had to be disconnected. None of the manuals I saw had very clear instructions & I looked at several. After these things were disconnected, it still didn't want to budge & I'm not one to get too violent with things but it does take a little force as this box has been in there 16 years & didn't want to budge. We could probally do this job again in 3 to 4 hours tops as we now know what to do. If anybody else is doing this, I'll be happy to walk them through it. And yes there was coolant on the floor before we started & it was pretty darn cold driving in the 20's without heat.
