Engine boggs out.
I am trying to tune my double barrel 40 webber to my 1835cc bug. It boggs out so should i advance timing? lean outthe carb? add more fuel? or put timing to stock?
The timing is advance just a little about 12 degrees above TDC and i dont know how to get the most power out of it Another thing. when my engine is cold in the morning and im driving it, and i floor it, the engine sounds like its working much faster but im not going any faster. any ideas? -Rick |

Re: Engine boggs out.
When it bogs out, does it smoke? If it does and the smoke is black, your running too rich, back off the fuel. If there's little or no smoke, there's a few things to check. I can't recall offhand what base timing spec's are,(10 Degree's Before TDC???) but unless your running an aftermarket cam/heads/etc.., it would be best to return it to base timing(base timing means vacuum line on distributor removed and plugged, engine idling. Assuming your engine vacuum is good, the vacuum advance needs to work properly. The easiest way to test is with a timing light(with vacuum advance hose connected to distributor). record timing while the engine is idling, then record again with engine revved above 2,000 RPM. If there is a noticeable difference, the vacuum advance is probably working. As for the 2nd question: I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but from what you described, the clutch is badly worn and needs replacing.

Re: Engine boggs out.
You'll have to seperate the engine and transmission to access the clutch. A book will definitly help. And you'll need plenty of tools.
