Question how do i attach a bonnet to a body?

so i've had an R34 by tamiya for a while and i bought the dress up kit from SAS and have removed the bonnet and am interested now in attaching the new bonnet...question is, how would i do this? looks a bit trickier than just glueing it together

any tips?

I'd get some styrene strip, cut off half inch or so pieces, and use them to create a lip under the bonnet. you can test fit the bonnet in place, and glue the styrene strip in place with liquid cement- it won't attack the resin. When you're happy with how it fits, glue the bonnet in place with epoxy or CA. Then, I'd probably cut some chunks of sprue, and reinforce the joint from oundernieth, again with epoxy or CA. You're going to need some reinforcement, with the body missing the original bonnet and grille.

Oh, and welcome to AF!

Re: how do i attach a bonnet to a body?

A common method is to use brass rod and tube to make a hinge. The rod should fit snugly in the tube and pivot easily. That is how I did it on my GT40. The tube can be hidden under the body with the two ends of the rod glued to the hood (or even better the two rods can slide into two holes drilled in a bracket).

It is very fiddly to get exactly right and I don't have any pictures sorry. Basically use your imagination and engineering skills!

EDIT: Hang on you just want to glue it closed? I was thinking so it could articulate to show the engine. In that case ignore me and follow MPWR's advice

My suggestion in cases like this are about my standard response, use the search feature, this has been asked before

Typical useless reply.

Make sure you glue or tape the bumper before you test fit the hood. Resin tends to shrink, so the hood may not be wide enough (in which case, add a strip of styrene on both sides).

Then, tape one side of the hood, and while holding the other, check the body and hood alignment from the top and front. Glue the open side, remove the tape, and glue the other side (again, check the alignment carefully).

After that, add supports from the inside as MPWR described above. Before you do so, dry-fit the interior tub and windows to see how the chassis fit the body. Make sure there is enough space between the body and the front inner tire housing because Tamiya kits tend to be tight in those areas and you don't want the added lips to interfere with the body-chassis fitting.

To an otherwise useless thread....

Do you ever get tired of seeing the same questions asked 5 times a weeK?
