removing 700r4

I got my rebuild kit the other day so Im almost ready to get going on it but Im not sure about a couple things. In the chiltons manual the last step of the removal says to support the engine using chevrolet special tool BT-6424 or its equivalent. I looked all over the internet and couldnt get any info on it. What is that thing? Also how would I tell if I needed a new torque converter? Thanks

A general rule of thumb...if you rebuild it, replace the torque converter, in case junk got into it. ALSO, if it has a transmission cooler, flush it out good to remove any debris that may have gotten in it.

To remove the trans DO NOT support the engine. Support the trans on a trans jack and slowly let it down so you can get at the 6 mount bolts with a 4 foot long extenstion and 9/16" universal socket. Once you have everything off and the bolts out, jack the trans back up until the engine is about level and then slide the trans back until it is free from the engine (remember to remove the TC to flex plate bolts). The engine will remain level all on its own without any further support with the trans off of it.
This is the voice of experience speaking, I just did a trans R&R in my 91 'Bird.

Re: removing 700r4

Refer to "engine swap need help" thread by camaro84.

I find it much easier to tilt the motor back against the firewall. to eash their own, as long as it gets done.
