Do you have keyless or something like that? I owned a 2000 civic, and i just swapped out the old head unit, and everything worked fine. I had a DX though, so if you have a higher model, you might have a feature that needs it.
You can always try to use one of the adapter harnesses, and just remove the old radio and see what happens. Then you're only out time if it doesn't work. |

Re: 98 civic ..funk the stock stereo i want it out and new one in and working
i do have a dx but my stock stereo is part of my alarm but the only thing that doesnt seem to work on my alarm since i took the stereo out is the locking of the doors when i turn the car on wich i can do without but the main problem is i test the wires for power and i get the acc wire running at full when the car is on but the constant is only at 6 volts wich isnt enough i guess to turn the radio on so the stock stereo disabled something when i took it out ..........or could i have blown a fuse the stereo fuse isnt blown is there another fuse thats blown or is this the alarm system ?

You can replace the head unit, but because your security system/keyless entry system is part of the head, if you replace the head unit, your going to have to get an aftermarket security system as well. I replaced my head with an alpine 9845, and soon to be getting a security system too.

Re: 98 civic ..funk the stock stereo i want it out and new one in and working
There's actually a nifty trick to putting in an aftermarket head unit in those Civics with factory Keyless. Metra makes a "T" harness specificly for this application. It plugs into the factory radio, then into the factory harness, then gives you another set of wires to run for the new radio. And what about that factory radio? Well, I remove take off the front panel to the factory radio and place some duct tape over the now exposed opening. Take out the center console piece right below the factory radio, and believe it or not, there's enough room back there to shove that factory radio back there and still get the center console back on. You retain your factory keyless and domelight funtions, and get the benefit of a new radio! Done it literally dozens of times (though it seems like hundreds). Never seen a problem arise from it yet. You can look for that Metra wiring harness at your local install shop, or check out Crutchfield or Metra online. The part number is 70-1720T. You can check it out at www.metraonline.com.
