bmw 116i - gearing

hello,

is there anyone to help me out with what actually is the short gearing doing its work in the transmission of the bmw116i 5dr hatch. does it affect the torque at initial speeds?

does it in any way improve the fuel efficiency of the beemer. but it seems to be a car lagging in performance at start and at reaching the top speed.

in what way the gearing affect the gear shifts for reaching the top speed ( does the 2,3,and 4th gears actually are responsible in the actual speeding and engine torque)
