new s14....

whats up guys, i just recently picked up a 95 s14 for $700.

the bad -
needs paint, its two colors on the outside (front half is blue back half is yellow), just finished up hooking a stock s14 stereo, and putting leds in the dash cluster with a toggle switch because they didnt work before, the tach kinda works, but you can tell its off it moves real slow, the odometer doesnt work, the mph gauge doesnt work, some of the trim peices are painted blue(i think im going to take some laquer thinner to them), its a base model, so it doesnt have vlsd, and it doesnt have 5 lug, the guy said it leaks a fair amount of oil, but i havent noticed a big difference. needs new subframe bushings (everytime i engage then disengage the clutch real fast you hear a clunk from the rear.)

the good - well i bought if for $700 is the first thing,
it has 17" enkei rims(4 lug), they look pretty cool i guess, kuhmo ecsta tires, No body damage at all, it has a 5 speed conversion done to it, it has a 2.5" catback exhaust, veilside front bumper(need to bolt it on, its held on by what looks to be speaker wire right now.), all the exterior lights work except for the reverse lights (im guessing because of the 5 speed swap), interior seats couldnt be cleaner, has sony xplod speakers all around i guess thats a plus..,

just wondering if you guys knew why the tach and mph gauges werent working right... the mpg gauge jumps to like 100 mph when the car starts moving, and the tach moves real slowwww, but it seems to work at idle.
also the temp gauge doesnt work... im guessing all of these problems are related to the 5 speed swap previously done. what do you guys think?

Re: new s14....

i had the same problem with my speedo, i just bought a new cluster because i figured it was a problem electrically in the cluster. This might not be the fix for you since it happens when you start moving. Look at the speed senser and make sure its intalled correctly and check the gears on it to make sure they are still good.

the '96 gauge clusters are the same as the '95 ones right? im pretty sure they are, so i can just switch with my buddy who has probably a good 2 or 3 laying around and see if that works.

ive been searching and i found that the auto ecu will "work". i dont know if it will work right but it will run... anyone know?

Re: new s14....

yeah, a guy on ka-t.org uses an auto ECU, it should work. Make sure to test a new cluster before putting all the interior pieces back in, like plug it and lay it on the steering column and go drive. It sounds like a simple mistake, but if that doesnt fix it or the newer cluster doesnt work, you'd be pissed when you found out you have to take it back out LOL.

Re: new s14....

clusters are easy as hell to remove, steering column plastic peices, then remove the plastics peice up above the cluster and then remove the cluster, takes like 5 minutes with a screw driver, but yea hopefully that will fix it.
btw what would you pay for a '95 base model, with power windows, mirrors, that looked completely stock, with a decent paint job, with 120k miles, that drove and ran well, and the interior was completely stock with stock radio. i was thinking around 2.5k with rims and tires.

shit, even though the paint is bad and it has minor problems, around here that would go for about 5k... thats considered low mileage for what ive seen

Re: new s14....

Another cheap project car...what the heck is up with that paintjob, inside and out.

I was about to say buy a better s14(then I read you were still looking) but it's up to you. The project isn't a loss but it may cost a lot to fix..actually I haven't heard why you bought it for so little, the gearbox is clunky, anything wrong with the engine? maybe I missed something.

actually the gearbox isnt clunky, its actually a common problem ive heard on base model s14 95's one of my buddies friends is doing the same thing, its the rear subframe bushings..
the paint doesnt look bad at all, yes its two colors, but blue and yellow arent that bad together..
engine runs strong as can be, and it might need a new tranny because it grinds into 3rd and 5th alot, but thats easy fix, honestly how much does a ka tranny cost these days, $100?
