As I mentioned in your other post, you can install an AMC v8, if the engine had a straight six already.

Most likely it does.

The Amc V8 were made since the mid-1950's, in 304, 327, 360, 390 and 401 sizes.

They are excellent engines with many performance parts available. IMO go for a 390. The 360 has almost as much potential and is much more common.
The 401 is great if you can find one. They tend to be a little expensive and difficult to rebuild if they are worn.

As for installation, if you have the 6 cyl engine, a V8 will bolt right up to the transmission.
use an 1970's AMC Hornet V8 engine mounts, radiator, rad hoses and exhaust (or have duals custom made)

Do not bother with any GM, Dodge or Ford engine. They will not fit the trans. It would be an expensive nightmare to install anything other than a AMC driveline, especially if you still want the 4 wheel drive to work.
