93 Geo Prizm Engine failure

Any ideas????

I was driving my 93 Geo Prizm at 70mph when the speedometer went to 0, the odometer stopped registering, and the check engine light suddenly came on. About 5 miles later the sound of metal began and the power was reduced to about 2-3 mph.

Pulled the car over, waited a few minutes and no fluids leaking, fluid levels were fine, but the engine was idling out of sync. Cannot get the car seen by a mechanic for a few days due to the weekend.

Any ideas what I might expect to be told by my mechanic??

Thanks in advance.

By this time I presume that you have been to a garage... Did the mechanic tell you that your timing belt slipped and you were bangin your valves on the pistons??
