Has anyone had the problem in an LS6 where the serp belt has rubbed a hole in the underside of the upper water pump Hose? It runs upward from the top of pump and directly over the serp belt and connects to the manifold between the heads.
Car has 78k on it and the only thing I can think of is: 1.) The Belt has stretched just enough to allow it slap the underside of teh hose occassionaly. 2.) The design puts the hose too close to teh belt (not much clearance there) Just curious if anyone else has had this happen. Going to change the hose and the belt and hopefully it will last another 78k. Luckily, I smelled it when my wife pulled it into the garage and I caught it at the perfect timing! Shawn |

Re: LS6 Belt wore hole in upper H20 Pump Coolant Hose
I would take the serp belt off to check it for a split in the threads. It sounds like a frayed piece of the belt is rubbing against the hose.

Re: LS6 Belt wore hole in upper H20 Pump Coolant Hose
Have you had service done to the car recently which required removing the upper hose? Maybe the hose was installed end for end and it is now routed in a way that compromises the distance between the belt and the hose.
I ran in to this when helping a friend change out transmissions on a 3000GT VR-4. The lower hose can go on either way. One way is correct, the other way appears correct, until you try to shift gears and realize it interferes with the shift cables and will prevent the tranny from shifting into reverse. I'll have to take a look at my wife's LS6 to see if this would be possible, and also note how much clearance there is between the hose and the belt. [edit] Doesn't look like a person could easily get the hose reversed. I took a look at the wife's, unfortunately, without removing a bunch of air intake stuff, it's hard to get an idea how close the belt normally runs to hose. -Rod Last edited by shorod; 11-13-2005 at 07:03 PM. |

Belt was fine (although likely a bit stretched with 75k). I replaced it anyway. No Service and hose can only go on one way.
The clearance is very tight and there is nothing really that can be done about it. I was going to make a shield for the underside of the Hose, but assumed it was just a result of the belt stretch and maybe a bit of slap on occassion with the tight clearance to begin with. I will do so if it appears that the belt is still touching every now and then. I would definitely check yours though. Right near the bend on the underside is where the belt is closest when you manually pull up on it. Shawn |
