motor question

I have an 86 monte SS and i'm gonna put a new motor in it but i cant decide which one to go with, I was thinking of either a 383 stroker or a 406 but then i was toying around with the idea of just hoppin up the 305 HO thats in it, is there anyone out there that has hopped up a 305 and got alot of power out of them because I've only seen them put out around 300 horse and i want around 450 to 500 and I highly doubt a 305 can do that, but if anyone knows of anybody that has could you let me know how you did it? thanks a bunch

Re: motor question

I'd go with the 383 or 406. The 305 is a weaker engine. I built a SB Chevy 400 into a 406 and first installed it in my '76 Monte Carlo, then in later years, pulled it out and installed it in a '78 Monte Carlo. I was very pleased with the performance of the 406 and when it was in the '78 was ''quite'' fast. The '86 is of similar weight and platform so it should work out well.
