fuel filter replacement

How hard is it to replace the fuel filter in a 2001 Galant? Could a gal do it herself? I have researched how much a fuel filter is and the labor, and its not pretty...I would like to save me a little money by replacing it myself.

u may find a cheaper option in a univeral filter. they are generic but do the job as good. fuel filters a tricky bastards. u need 2 spanners one to fit the top bolt and a smaller one for the bottom nut. get in a comfy position if its possible and pull the two spanners simultaneously toward eachother. if u can do it (its real tough even for the pros by hand) u will hear a crack and its smooth sailing from there. twist the top bolt off and then twist the filter til it comes free. there will be a small amount of fuel spilling out of the filter. mark a line on the top bolt parralell to the whole through the thread. twist the new filter on by hand put the top bolt and fuel back in (dont use the old 'o' rings. u should have got new ones withe new filter) tighten with spanners like earlier but backward and use a bit of brute force to line the mark u drew earlier on the top bolt with the fuel line. run ur car for 10min checking around the filter for leaks. u wont notice a difference for about 10 miles but ur line will clear up quickkly. also the next time u fill up add a fuel injector cleaner (under $10) to the tank before filling up. it should clean ur line right up.
on the other hand a mechanic shouldnt charge alot for fitting if u already have the part. with the right tools (rattle guns are good) its a 15min job and shouldn't cost u more than $20. if ur told different ur being lied to. i had a problem getting mine off so i got the pros to do it for $16.50. goodluck

I bought my car not too long ago and it came with a VIP. This means a whole mess of good things but the one that will most interest this thread is that I get free oil change done as long as i own this vehicle.

If you have just purchased this vehicle, you may want to ask your dealer why you weren't offered this.

If not, changing a filter is not a hard task: 1st safely lift the car with a jack, you will see the filter from beneath (purchase at auto store), remove all the oil from the car oil tank first. Second, remove filter and installed new one. Close oil tank escape (where oil came out), close everythign up and add specified oil type test amount. You probably already knew all this but its not a big deal. A gal can do it!!!
