newbie with t/a

i just bought a 98 trans am. Its got 73K miles, 6 speed. Few questions. the owner had a loudmouth exhaust on the car. Its still on so wut will be some good headers so i can keep that mean sound. My engine is also pretty filthy so i was wondering if a heavy degreaser followed with a dress up kit would do the job. And is the car reliable and about how many more miles could i get outta it. Thanks and this is my first post.

Re: newbie with t/a

The loudmouth will not sound good with headers. WAY too raspy.
I know....I ended up cutting off the Loudmouth.

If I were to have my engine bay cleaned I would spend the $35 or so and let the dealer do it. That way it comes out perfect and if anything gets screwed up, they did it.

Re: newbie with t/a

Not sure about the gas tank or the brakes. Never really looked into that.

I would recommend the LS6 intake for sure. GREAT mod. Headers give a decent amount of power as well....but they will make your car much louder.
Throttle body....have your stocker ported and polished. That will work best for you I think. Normally costs $75-100.
Intake mods shouldn't change your exhaust sound. Maybe just a hair, but you probably won't notice it.

Re: newbie with t/a

The first time I did the intake install it took me a while.
Now I think I could do it in under 2 hours.
It takes a while to get used to working under the dashboard. Plus you have to be careful to not break the oil pressure sending unit. Also just take your time.
I am not a fan of the weiland intake. I don't think it is any better than the LS6 manifold.
The FAST is better, but also VERY expensive.
The LS6 is the best one for the price. IF you want you can have it painted or carefully do it yourself. When I had mine I sprayed it with a glossy black. Had that intake for about a year and never had any flaking problems with the hi-temp paint.

Personally I like the stock look. I wanted my FAST to be black, but I would have to paint it and it would look funny.

Re: newbie with t/a

I would guess around $250. 3-4 hours labor at $75 an hour.
