2001 Ford Taurus Fuel Guage not working

My fuel guage has not been working for about two years now. The check engine light has been off and on throughout that time. I finally went to AutoZone last week and had them do a diagnostic test to see what was the problem. Their reading said "fuel guage sensor circuit A malfunction" and I believe the code was PO 640.

I sent this same request and the reply I got was to get the code for what was wrong and then people could help me.

Is this a problem that I can fix on my own or can only a mechanic fix this? Also, How much does it cost to get this fixed?

Thanks for all of your help in the past helping me fix my car. This forum has saved me quite a bit of money.

Re: 2001 Ford Taurus Fuel Guage not working

I have the same problem w/ my 2001, obviously it's common, and year specific. Do you have a Flex fuel engine? In my case they (State of MD) failed the car for emissions because the engine light was on. (It has nothing to do w/ emissions). The correct OBD code is 0460, Fuel level sender malfunction / Fuel level Circuit A malfunction.
However, it is NOT malfunction of (per two months of utter frustration): Fuel Level Sender unit (in gas tank); Fuel Gauge; Anti Slosh module, the latter two are located in the instrument pod. So save your money and don't spend it on THOSE items. It might be related to the Flex Fuel Sensor Module (Dealer's cost - the part only: $490) or the CPM (computer), $1000. Everybody was clueless - including mechanics, and the Dealer's Mechanics were not a whole lot better, they wanted to charge to read the OBD code - on their own - $100 alone, and all repair charges and parts cost after that. They were clueless about the location of the Flex Fuel Sensor Module, the Parts Dept took 1/2 hour to figure out the official Ford name of it to find it in their parts book - after calling Detroit. So I wish you luck. If somehow you can figuere it out what it is, then PLEASE POST it here.

Re: 2001 Ford Taurus Fuel Guage not working

I have the factory service manual section for troubleshooting code P0460 for the 2002 model year Fords. I've saved it down in PDF format and could send it to you. The file is 48.7kB in size. PM me with your e-mail address if you'd like me to send it.
