Question Please help me..... Plzzzzz

my sons 2001 chevy cavalier car was recently broken into and I had to install a new steering column (from a junk yard) since the one in the car was completly trashed. Now the anti theft light is constanly on along with the service light. I was told I would have to have the system reprogramed to accept the new (used) ignition switch. Also we had to put back in the stock radio since his premium one was stolen and was unable to do the decoding on this. I tried pressing the 2-4 or 1-3 and nothing worked. I hold the buttons for over 10 seconds and get nothing. All that shows on the radio is "loc"... Is this because of the new ignition switch and can I do this myself or do I need to take to the dealer to get resolved? I also tried disconnected the battery for about two hours. and that didnt work either. Thanks for reading this

well for the antitheft light must be something that is not plugged in

same with service lights

just take some time and look for all wires to make sure all r connected where is supose to

service light sometimes is on when daytime running lights arent working

just look for any loose wire and start from there

do you know of any wiring diagrams around I could look at to make sure? The person that rip the shit out of his car did a number on it. I connected everything that need to be connected. You don't think it might have to do with the installation of the new column which in cluded the ignition switch?

thanks for your reply

everyone talks about these chips in the keys. Are the visible? cause I dont see any. Old key tumbler was trashed durin the break-in. I was told by someone that if this cars old key had a chip in it that with a new ignition swith and tumbler installed, that the car wouldnt even start. Is this true? Because this car starts up and runs.

Take your old key and have the pellet/chip read and have a new key made for the ign you now have with the old key pellet/chip value.
Also retrive the codes from body/eng computer and post back codes.
Also clear codes and see if they return.

can you go to any hardware store to get key made or do you need to go to a dealer.

I talked to the dealer and they said for around $84 they would fix the problem of the service light and anti-theft. Sound reasonable?

The key will need to made by dealer unless your locksmith is set up to make them.
They are special keys.
Not many hardware stores are set up to make them.
Good Luck
