'92 Chevy Cavalier Oil Sensor Question
Hey guy,
I'm a noobie here, and have been working on cars for a while and am looking for some information from some of you guys. I have a 92 chevy cavalier z24 3.1L, Well recently it didn't want to start, Well I got that problem resolved, changed the starter, and now she roars down the road. My problem is, after changing the starter, my oil pressure guage shows no reading at all. I have checked the oil, and its fine, just changed it before teh starter went out. I didn't notice the oil guage previously when i would push start it. Now that i have changed the starter, i have noticed that it has says it has no oil pressure. I was wondering if you guys have any ideas where the oil pressure sensor is at. I'm wondering if i didn't accidently hit it when changing the starter. I know there is a sensor looking thing down by the starter, and the oil filter is in the same area. When i followed where that little sensor goes it seems like it goes to the same general area, where the filter is. I know this because the filter was warm after i recently drove it around a couple of block, and it was warm where the sensor goes in. Could i have busted or broken the sensor, thus causing the guage to say there is no pressure. Also is this sensor even relevant. Thanks for any advice. CruJones |

Re: '92 Chevy Cavalier Oil Sensor Question
The pressure sensor is the block mounted sensor by the starter. It is possible it got whacked or disconnected. If you replace it, make sure to use thread tape or sealant.

Re: '92 Chevy Cavalier Oil Sensor Question
I remember back when my gauges would go dead for brief periods of time. A solid whack to the dash always fixed it for me. Then again, I'm too lazy to actually fix stuff.

Re: '92 Chevy Cavalier Oil Sensor Question
Well, I replaced that sensor i was talking about and it fixed my problem, pumping oil and everything, it seems that that sensor was also a switch that runs the oil pump.
Thanks for all your help guys. |

Re: '92 Chevy Cavalier Oil Sensor Question
Naw, there was a sensor by the oil filter, that is also a switch/sensor, that tells the oil pump to run. it was broken and leaking.

Re: '92 Chevy Cavalier Oil Sensor Question
There's no sensor that tells the oil pump to run. It's connected to the camshaft and runs when the engine does. The Oil pressure sending unit(or switch, Depending on the guage cluster) commands the fuel pump to run however. So if you run out of oil, it will shut off the fuel pump which shuts down the engine, sorta like a safety switch.

Re: '92 Chevy Cavalier Oil Sensor Question
Well whatever it was, was leaking the oil, and it was a black sensor/switch looking thing in chiltons. My gauges where showing no oil pressure, and if it was connected to the fuel pump, then the car wouldn't run for an extended period of time right? I was behind the starter, by the oil filter, so i assume it had something to do with the oil pressure. You could be right, but the main thing is i replaced it and everything runs fine. I could of possibly been connected to the fuel pump as my car wouldn't idle right at 1,000 rpm, it used to drop to around 800rpm, but after replacing it idles steady at 1000 rpm.
Hope someone finds this thread useful.. Thanks for all the help |
