88 cherokee transmission issue

ok here it is, when i bought my cherokee it had some tranny issues, what that issue is, is that reverse works fine and d3, and d2 also both work fine, but when its in drive and i try to accelerate it will rev up, but it will just crawl, so i changed the whole trans and case and its doing the exact same thing.so i dont think its the trans, so what else could it be. im thinking something electrical?????????

Not Trans!

This is the Throttle Position Sensor. I replaced the trans in mine too. First it would buck on the highway when the gas peddle is in the cruise spot. I would have to gas or go slow. When it got really bad the trans would act like it was in Neutral until I hammered it. But no slipping. Dead spot in the sensor failed to send position to the tranny. Tranny was confused. 65-95.00 for the sensor if you have auto.

ok now what??????????????????

so i changed the tps, and its still doing the same thing, now also along with that problem with the tranny, it would also bogg out and almost stall when i give it gas, when its running cold, so im going to try another tps because the one that i just tried is old and used, but is there anything else that could cause the tranny issue.....?

Now with a little bit more info it may be fuel related. How sure are you that you do have trans problems anyway?

You can check both of your TPS's with a meter on Pins 1 and 2 or 1 and 3. You need to know which contact in the plugs carry and send the signal to the transmission and simutaniously to the ignitionsystem mixing fuel and air etc. That is why there are two tails on your TPS and I am assuming you have auto trans.

You can turn slowly the switch and you will see a gradual incline in resistance as you turn the L shaped metal piece. There are two settings to use. Continuaty and Ohms.

Cont setting will ring or beep telling you a complete circuit is present and does not care about a resistance value. You will hear a break in the beep If there is a dead spot.

Resistance or Ohms methode. You ahould be able to see a steady ingress or regress value of resistance.

It also sounds like your used TPS is even worse than your origional one. I went through 3 of them and changed 2 transmissions a few years ago before I went out and spent the 90.00 for a brand new TPS. Just doit and you will feel as retarded as I did 16 hours of labor, 57 or so GO-JO baths later.

The bogged down problem seems like your fuel pump may be bad, the sock is clogged or you have need for a fuel filter. If the problem seams to go away after a fill up, you have stirred all the sludge long enough for your pump to be quenched. and it doesn't last long.

You could also check out the MAP sensor or the vacuum line going to it.
My 89 4.0 auto had the same problem while in drive. I took it back to the dealer where I bought it and he replaced the vacuum line going to the MAP sensor. He said it had a hole. That solved the problem.

TPS tells computer where throttle plate is, closed or WOT, wide open
throttle, this is also where trans gets its commands from.
Trans and throttle are side by side in sensor ( TPS ) . It needs to be set at 83% of the input / output or .65V this is for proper perfromance.
