96 Civic Si

Hi guys im new here so if i missed a similar thread please point me in the right direction
Our family car right now is a 03 honda pilot, and since im going to university soon, i need to get a car.
i was at a dealer the toher day and say a 1996 Silver Civic Si coup with vtec dohc
the car felt really nice and was fully loaded. cept the previous owner wa an idiot and lowered the car and left on the standard hond rims . When i was test driving it, i decided to check out the vtec.
let me say i dont have to much experiance with the vtec in hondas. all i know s that if i floor our pilot, i hear is shift for a second and then it starts hauling ass.
i floored the civic and it just accelerated as any other auto... no sudden thrst of speed. it sounded as though the guy put in an aftermarket exhaust because it sounded nice.
so i'd like to ask if there was something wrong with that civic. if not. it had about 170k kms on it. what do u guys think would be a fair offer to give?
thank you so much in advance for any input on this

Edit: i would also like to add that this is my first caro please excuse and nooby stuff in this thread
Edit2: are there any chronic problems in 96 Si's i should be worried about

Re: 96 Civic Si

from your post and mention to kms I'm guessing you're from canada. The Si in canada is the same as an EX in the US. They didn't have a DOHC motor, it was SOHC and that would also explain why you didn't feel the VTEC kick in and why it didn't do shit when it crossed over.

Re: 96 Civic Si

automatic??? That sales guy was filling you full of shit. There is no such thing as a 96 Si in the US. Not to mention, if there were, they wouldn't be an auto.Post some pics of the car and engine, we can help......it could be a hybrid....96 w/a swap.

Re: 96 Civic Si

but still even if there is a car like that in Canada, it wouldn't be an auto....

Re: 96 Civic Si

okay read my post again, in canada the Si is the equivalent to the American EX. He probably doesn't know that the motor in it is a SOHC motor.

Re: 96 Civic Si

i see now, i didn't get the relationship between Canada and his car.....i didn't know that the EX was an Si in Canada. I personally think that's degrading to the real Si's, but w/e.

Re: 96 Civic Si

yes im canadian, im sorry i failed to put that in the first post.
as for it being sohc. i could have misread the S for a D on the sideof the car. it was night time, the car was silver.

so if i want a real vtec with that little extra kick, it needs to be dohc?

thanks for help guys

Re: 96 Civic Si

Every post from now on will need to start with the Phrase "I'm Canadian" if in fact you are Canadian.

Re: 96 Civic Si

much better....and as far as a DOHC vs a SOHC, a B16A (DOHC VTEC) is going to have about 160hp while the D16Y8 (SOHC VTEC) is going to make about 127hp.....there is a big difference and a B series is much more easily modified. It is a better engine and redlines higher.

If the car was modded and it had DOHC on the side, it was probably just some ricer that thought it would be cool to have the DOHC sticker.
