Hi,
I have a 88 ranger v6 2.9L automatic with overdrive. With the transmission in the overdrive position, the truck will only shift from 1 -> 2 -> 3 regardless if it is in Drive or Overdrive. Even if it the transmission is changed while driving from Overdrive to Drive and vise versa, it stays in third. There is no attempt to shift into overdrive by the tranny and would be easier if it would then slip back to third, it just never shifts to overdrive. Looking at some of the forums, there are some references to the VSS(Vehicle Speed Sensor), would this be the problem or something else? Thanks |

Re: 88 ranger will not shift to overdrive
maybe your overdrive button is malfunctioning. I would start there. make sure it works and can command on.

Re: Re: 88 ranger will not shift to overdrive
I don't believe he has an OD button. At least he shouldn't
.3-4 shift should be computer controlled on the 88. I would first scan for code, then inspect the wiring to the shift solenoid and between the solenoid and the ECC. The solenoids are on the transmission valve body. Had that same problem, ran the codes and got a MAF code on my 88. (I converted my ranger from MAP to MAF, you'll never see that code) I had another MAF lying around, and a little while later it came back. Pete |

Re: Re: Re: 88 ranger will not shift to overdrive
Yes, you are correct. There isn't an overdrive button. Replaced the VSS ($17) and wham! Overdrive functions! Easy cheap fix!
