starting problem

I have a 1996 grand am se with the 2.4 and auto trans.The car will start and run fine for 1 or 2 seconds and then shut off.after that it will turn over but does not even try to start.If you let the car sit for a few hours,It will start again for a second and shut off.I plugged a code reader into it,but it said there were no codes.If I had to guess,I would say the ignition is shutting down.what could it be and how do I test for it? Thank you.
