Unhappy 2002 Galant Brake problem

My brakes were squealing so I thought that I needed to replace my front brake pads. I replaced my brake pads and for about a day or two the squealing stopped, but now the squealing came back and now right before the car comes to a complete stop I'm hearing a howling sound along with some squealing. Is there something else that I can check to stop the noise? Or can someone tell me what causes the noise and how I can stop it?

I have a 2000 galant and had the same problem with my brakes. I went to napa and they have a new grade of ceramic brake pads that are very reasonably priced. I changed the pads to the ceramic pads and changed my rotors too while I was at it. The squealing problem went away.
