Z6 Build Suggestions

Alright, lets see what you guys can come up with. I got a D16Z6 I gotta rebuild, twist is, I need the motor to look as stock as possible, no dead give aways to it being modified. Now the people that I'm trying to disguise this to are mostly typical american muscle car rednecks so they don't know that much about hondas. The most the motor might be broke down and checked will be having the head pulled off, so no aftermarket headgasket, but different OEM pistons should be fine.

This build is going to be for a FWD Dirt track racecar, and the rules as far as the motor goes is its gotta be stock, but I know some of the other guys cheat as well and my competition is Ford Taurus SHO's and Ford probe V6 and Turbo 4 bangers are the main cars out there.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Re: Z6 Build Suggestions

use 88-89 teg pistons, they up the compression more, somewhere around 10.5:1 i've been told (thats what mine has)

port ur stock intake manifold, and slap on a factory 60mm throttle body (b-series) and dont say b doesnt fit on d, because it does, i've seen it first hand, no modifying!

take ur crank and get it lightened, knifed, and balanced,

get a lightweight flywheel, and upgraded clutch

get an Si trans and u should be set man

Re: Z6 Build Suggestions

You can run the Y8 intake manifold, its a bit better for top end power, and I doubt they'd notice a camshaft. Also, the OE y8 (96-98 ex) headgasket is a metal one that you can remove a layer on.

Lets not forget ecu tuning, if you are running the z6 in a 4 g I hope you swapped it over to OBD-1, chip the ecu with Uberdata or Chrome and you can move rev limits, vtec, and give her a bit more fuel.

The tire size is crutial too, you can play around with that to give you better gearing.

OK first find you some P29 (USDM D16A1) or PM7 (JDM ZC) pistons, same thing pretty much. With a Z6 gasket you should be about 13.6:1 c/r and with a two layer Y8 gasket about 14.1:1 c/r.

Get you a delta 272 regrind cam. They add some nice power and are pretty cheap ($100-125).

Then just add some fuel mangement and go have fun.

P.S. If you have the time/money might want to have the head port and polished, and try to find you a Y8 intake mani and get that port and polished too.

And like posted before, get you a b-series throttle body. I have seen a GSR throttle body on a d series (bolted right up, so 1PhatCx is right)

Re: Z6 Build Suggestions

Alright, good to see the knowledge is still good in this place.

Ami, you were the main person I was wanting an opinion from, but I guess they covered it good. Was told you was out at SEMA.

Alright, thanks guys, this gives me something to work with. Ill probably get the y8 intake, but I won't port and polish it just in case it does get checked. I'm not able to chip the ECU because its possible to get checked. I'm actually gonna try to get a 5th gen to race, but if I have to ill throw it in my 4th gen, just really don't want my civic to end up on the track.

I have until middle of March before the season starts, so I should have time to get the motor rebuilt and hopefully find another car. but as some of you know, it takes me awhile to do stuff sometimes, but i'm getting better at actually working on my cars since I started working at a salvage yard

Re: Z6 Build Suggestions

Quick question. Are you going to be keeping the dash? If so I would install another ECU, chipped to run fuel management, up inside the dash hidden from sight. Then leave the old ECU there with the wires running into the firewall, but not connected.

One problem with running that cam would be that its non-vtec...

Last time I called delta they said they were working on vtec cams but as of yet had none.

Re: Z6 Build Suggestions

I'm unsure on the dash, but that is a good idea. I don't know the tech inspector for next year so I don't know how much he actually knows about them, but I doubt he knows a whole lot, they usually don't, especially about imports.

that was really weird ami. I called you earlier today before I even read this...as you would say "thats just crazy"
