I believe thats the traction control switch. Turning it on or off you won't notice a difference unless its either icy, snowy or you are beating the hell out of your car.

Re: what does ets stand for?

It should illuminate "Trac Off" on your dash, up near the upper right-hand side. If it doesn't, then either your ETS isn't working, or your idiot light is burnt out. And like skibum said, the traction control is used to control your grip. If it detects differing speeds from your vehicle speed sensors in each hub, it will lean your a/f ratio and cut timing until your rpms drop to the point where the speeds are the same (i.e, you "hook up") - Turning off ETS though is actually one of the first things I do whenever I get into my car. If you're just driving aggressively on dry pavement, it can make a big difference in big launches, even when there's not much slippage. In the snow and rain too, I actually always turn mine off. I'd much rather be able to feather the throttle the way I want until it grabs rather then have the PCM try to do it for me.

I know it's called ASR on my camaros and the SLP start up state reversal unit is $70 from Summit Racing.

BTW, my son's 96 Grand AM has the ETS (Enhanced Traction System) warn light is illuminated. Once the car is started it can be toggled off but comes back on shortly because the ABS has become non-functional. I didn't stop to think that this was affecting engine performance. With 140k the car is hardly worth the expense to fix these things but I sure would like to over ride them....

Regards

If i recall it should be the last light on the speedometer side just past service vehicle soon light. ETS also could stand for Electrically Troubled System ( or at least thats mine)
