distorted chimes

i have a 2001 sc2 with 20.000 miles on it & in immaculate condition. sometimes the key chimes sound very distorted like a wounded duck, & other times, they sound like new. what can i do about this? is there some electronic chime unit i can replace? i know there'a a bulletin on this, but it doesn't tell what the repair procedure is unless you pay for it.....
