Serpintine belt

my ac unit froze on my 92 Bonneville, then the serpintine belt broke, I wanted to by-pass the ac unit and run without it being there . The guy at the parts counter said its the same belt with or without a/c is this true. I find that hard to believe and can someone help with the way it goes on

Re: Serpintine belt

All Bonnevilles came with AC, so there simply is no Bonneville belt available.

IMO look for a 88+ 3800 series engine that was in a car where AC was an option.............at this point,
I cannot think of one, except for maybe a fleet-specification Impala from the mid to late 90's, like a taxi cab.

Your parts guy may have a belt cross-reference guide he might let you look through. What you want to do is measure the length of belt you need, enough to load the idler pully a bit (but not too short) and measure the width and the number of ribs, then look for a belt with the same specs.

Re: Serpintine belt

the problem with your 92 Bonneville is there is no listing for one without A/C. What you'll have to do is run the existing belt around the remaining pulleys, and then mark it and measure it's length. Then go to the parts store and tell them you want a 6 rib belt of that length. Be very careful not to reverse the direction of rotation of any of your accessories, our you'll cause a whole mess of problems. If your motor mount isn't in the way, you should be able to make a straight shot from teh water pump to the alternator, but I can't remember which style mount your car has. It will cut almost a 3rd of the length of your belt, as the A/C compressor is a big loop down from the water pump and back up to the alternator
