Tell me if you have any thoughts or ideas about this situation:
I have a 2000 Xterra that I bought used back in August. The keyless entry worked for about 2 days before the battery went dead. I replaced it, and it worked again for about 2 days before going dead again. I tried it once more before figuring I had a bad remote. I bought another remote on eBay and got it programmed. Brand new battery in it, same result. The battery lasted about 2 days before it went dead. How can this be? It's obviously not just the one bad remote, because the same exact thing happened on the second remote. I have no idea what could cause this issue and don't know what to do about it. Can anyone offer assistance. Thanks for the input, Troy |

Re: Problem with Keyless Entry
Are you sure that the battery is going dead? Have you tested with a volt meter? I would say corrosion on the metal clips that contact the battery, but you say your replaced the whole remote. I have a 2000 xterra (bought in '99) and have only had one remote go bad on me (the big blue button wore out). I got a replacement at the dealer and it as well as the other original have worked ever since, even after swimming with it in my pocket. I did have to pop it open and let it dry a few minutes after swimming to be able to get back into my truck without the alarm going off.

Re: Problem with Keyless Entry
I cant think of anything besides the remote buttons being pressed by other keys on your keychain in your pocket...

Re: Problem with Keyless Entry
That is a good point. if the button is being continually pressed, I think the remote emits a constant signal. I have locked my doors inadvertently so many times because of my keys clanging together in my pocket. Maybe try looser fitting jeans (not wranglers)?

Re: Problem with Keyless Entry
My xterra locks itself frequently. I'm afraid to leave my keys in it while I run into a store because I've been locked out several times. i've been sitting in it when it does it and often there is someone else near getting in or out of their nissan.

Re: Problem with Keyless Entry
There are only so many codes to go around. You might try re-programming both of your remotes twice apiece to push out any other codes it might somehow have in the system, it only has 4 "slots" to remember.
The other way it can lock itself is if you unlock it but don't open a door, it will re-lock after a few minutes.
