humming from steering?

Recently, just after having my car inspected, I noticed a medium to high pitch hum that I think is comming from my steering wheel/column. The pitch of the hum changes when I turn the wheel. What kind of problem is this hum associated with?

Thanks

Did you check your power steering fluid? My old sentra used to get louder when it lost oil.

Well I have a 93 and it is a black and can shaped and facing the engine bay it is on the left. Just unscrew the lid and there shoud be a short tab sticking down with a measurement line on it. From there you just fill it to the right level with some power steering fluid. I don't have any experience though with newer cars though.
