ok well my friend blew a head gasket in his 86 toyota pickup 4x4 22r. so we ripped it apart and found that most likey a boat mechanic worked on it siliconed the head bolts and everthing els he could together. We got it all back together and pulled it out and snaped the timing chain.. pulled it back in and torer down and bought a new timing chain set and it was a 96 link... its to small and wont go on, ok so get the other 98 link chain.... to big and skips. not sure what year the head is becuase it was replaced from prev. owner but the ports on the head are round with the round egr ports on top.. One more werid thing is thats theres no oil in the filter... but theres no ticking from dry lifters.... so i donno anyone help thats had this problem.

In late 84 the dimensions of the head and block height of the 2R/E changed. You could have a mismatched set, but it's doubtful. Go here to help ID your head. They also have a page on IDing blocks.
Most likely you're not installing the TC corrrectly. Here's an excellent article on TC installation.

Re: timing chain getting frusterated.
put the off colored links on the dots of the crank gear and cam sprocket
if the engine is a single row chain on it then its most likely a late 84-up which is all the same through 95 the odds of the head being older double row chain style are slim, but not impossible the 86 set should be it, is only one set for them should be no issue at all silicone all over is not good if a bit of it ends up in the chain tensioner then that can be real bad for it, the chain can be a bit tough to install on these, are real tight fit usually but i hope you are not trying to install it with the tensioner and guides already on the engine dont do that put the chain and gear and sprocket on first then put the tensioner and guides on very simple, easy if you have to turn anything slightly to get the sprocket onto the cam then turn the cam with a punch in the hole in the front top of it by the front cam cap up there, cant miss that hole in the cam as long as colored/bright/dark chain link stays on the cam sprocket dot then it doesnt matter, wont have any problem of any kind

ok well i havnt taken the intake manifold off yet but the exaust ports are round telling me that the heads pre 84 (local machine shop told me) weither the intke ports are round or square is the difference that i need to know. but now by going off round ports pre 84 it would be the 98 link chain. but theres ALOT! of slack in the chain untill the ten. it fully extended but on a comp. stroke for #1 it skips time. just wondering if theres a blockage in an oil passage somwhere (creating the no oil in oil filter) beacuse i noticed this ten. are ran off oil pressure.
