What computer makes the engine go?

In an electronic controlled engine such as fuel injection, what is the main computer that makes the engine function? Is it the ECU (Engine control unit) What all exactly does that control? And what does the PCM do? Tranny? What computers do you need to make an engine and tranny function correctly when swapping?
