Keyless entry horn sound not needed

Two Issues I have:

1) My keyless entry remote only works when I am less than a foot close to my Buick. I have had the battery replaced on the key fob.
2) Is there a way for the keyless entry to unlock the doors without having the horn go off after "unlock" the button is pressed? My parents 1997 Century has the unlock feature without the horn. The horn only comes on when you actually lock the car.

Ideas and suggestions always appreciated!!

What year and model Buick are you referring to?

Whether the horn beeps when you use the keyless entry remote is a matter of how the body control module (BCM) is programmed.

On the distance problem try the resync procedure in the owner's manual. If that doesn't work then you may have a problem with the RCDLR receiver.

One of the differences between the Regal and Century is it has the higher level BCM which means a more elaborate interface with the Theft Deterrent System, etc. When the system is armed the BCM generates a .5 sec pulse (ground) to the horn relay. To disable this feature requires re-programming at a GM dealer probably for a nominal charge. The signal outputs the BCM at pin D10 (black wire) and goes to the horn relay located in the engine compartment fuse box. The BCM is located under the driver's side of the dashboard towards the emergency brake.

Whether it is really worth disabling the horn beep is really up to you but it can be done electrically at the wiring level without any other problems.

However, disabling the .5 sec. pulse output will also disable the horn when the red panic button is pressed, if available on the remote.

Thanks again for the advice. I think I will just leave it as is cause it is a little out of my skill range. But it is very interesting to learn and understand the issue.

I also would like to know if adding synthetic oil causes gaskets to leak?? The reason I ask this is because I bought the Regal in March this year with 132kms and it currently has 142kms. The oil is leaking from the valve covers in the engine from the gasket. But there was no leaks or "sweating" from that area when I first got the car. I only noticed the leak when it was on a hoist, about 4500kms after the oil was changed. Anyway I know that these are common leaks for the 3800 engine as it happend with my '91 Park Avenue, after adding the synthetic 10w 30 Mobil 1 oil. Does adding synthetic oil to these engines requires extra heavy duty gaskets to prevent leaking??

I've heard that about synthetic oil but I've been running Mobil 1 Syn in my '01 GS since 24K miles. It currently has 47K miles and none of the gaskets are leaking. On our '99 LS the valve cover gaskets starting leaking at 70K miles and had to be replaced. It currently has 108K miles but I am reluctant to use synthetic oil in it due to the age and mileage. I used the stock OEM AC Delco gaskets.
