2005 wrx???

im currently looking into buying a 05 wrx and wanted to know if there is anything i should know before i decide like are there any known probs with the car. What are the extent as far as power holding capabilities engine and tranny of course. And where can i look up more about the car as far as gas mileage, weight, 1/4 times, handling etc.
i currently have a 96 240 sx making 317 whp and would like something that i can get to perform similiar without having to build up internals.
Also any major difference between 02-03 to 04-05
any help would be appreciated.

Re: 2005 wrx???

Pretty easy to get up to about 240whp on the rex. That's like ECU, injectors, fuel pump, turbo, TBE, intake. Can I say ECU tuning is a must - you add a TBE without ECU tuning and you will get weird ass boost spikes, then the computer will relearn to operate with the addition and you'll be back to your old power levels

Anything higher than that and you'll definitely have to look at drivetrain strengthening. Engine internals, I don't know the limit.

Stock WRX runs mid 14s. Handling, understeers a bit - but generally, what a rush when taking corners. Gas mileage, pretty crap. Power delivery is more of a kick when boost hits, rather than smooth power delivery.

Generally, a WRX, although it responds very well to power gains, spend more money on handling aspects and you have one hell of a track car. It's still capable of being one hell of a drag car though, just that it's a waste for its potential.

Re: 2005 wrx???

Was that the only flaw you could spot Ray? :-P Fine fine, I take it back, it's decent, let's say. But I am pissed off because for the last 2 months I've been getting 15L/100km when the book says 12.xxxL/100km city and 9.xxxL/100km for highway. And this was driving 98% below 3200rpm and mainly on the highway! I got my best mileage for ages today which was 10L/100km. And with the high oil prices...

Oh and implicits14 I think I read somewhere that 17PSI is about the highest "safe" level of boost you can run on stock internals.

Re: 2005 wrx???

Sorry, I forget you're not in America RL, compared to American cars of similar performance, the WRX's mileage is amazing!

For continual high boost running on stock internals, I wouldn't range much above 14 psi myself.

Re: 2005 wrx???

Does the "safe" boost level depend a lot on the air/fuel mixture maps though? Because our local Aussie WRX experts, MRT, says with their EcuTek tuning maps 17PSI is totally streetable and safe - with a VF30 or VF34 though, of course.

But yeah, I'm not entirely certain on that. Why don't you get your 2005 WRX and tell us at what point it goes pop :-P :-)

Re: 2005 wrx???

for the stock td04 about 17psi is the limit other wise you will just start blowing hot air

you can get 230awhp without upgrading turbo but it requires a good tune and a lot of bolt tons (TBE, injectors, fuel pump, up pipe, headers, inlet pipe, ecu, maybe even upgraded tmic)

get some good suspension and port n polish the stock turbo and you have yourself a hell of a circuit car.....responsive as hell and great power down low

Re: 2005 wrx???

Rob, you're down unda??
You guys talk about fuel efficiency in L/100km??
That seems quite bizarre... In Japan, they talk about Km/L, sort of like Miles/gallon over here.

Anyway, there are no clear "known problems" with the car. Reliability of Subarus in general is in the league with Hondas and Toyotas according to consumer reports. People talk about transmission problems, but I feel that it's because people abuse their trannies, doing AWD launches and shit.

Understeering is somewhat of a problem if you drive hard, but stiffer rear sway bar could almost fix that problem, or at least, make it significan better.

Re: 2005 wrx???

Yup, I'm from Sydney, Aus. The country that got 5 of those 22B STi's hehehehe :P

Anyways, yeah, we used to meausre in Km/L then they introduced these new efficiency measuring standards and now it's all done in L/100km. It's pretty stupid but when you get used to it, it's all the same.

Re: 2005 wrx???

South Africa measures mileage in L/100 km too.

And Keita is quite right, the problem with the Subaru transmission isn't the transmission, it's the drivers.

Cheapest day of the week, normal unleaded which is 91RON is around $1.14/L atm. Premium 95RON which is what is recommended for my WRX is $1.20/L and the stuff recommended for STi's and the likes is 98RON which is usually about 1.35/L

1L = 0.264 US gallons...so someone can do the calcs if they want,
