285's should fit with no lift without a problem. You may can even fit 305's, but then you have to crank the torsion bars like hell.

I went to Costco yesterday and they said that 285 was too wide for the stock rim. But I dont believe him so I'm gunna look around at other places.

Re: can i put bigger tires on my 1500 hd

The 285 is almost 11" wide at the sidewall. In my early years of 4 wheeling, I was made to understand that you shouldn't run a wheel that was more than 2" narrower than the tire width. The dealer was probably referring to this argument when they said the tire was too big for stock rims. I'm sure the tire would mount, but you might be giving up some side flex because of the narrow stock rim. Most stock rims are only 5-6" wide. I put 16 x 8's on my truck, with the intention of mounting a 245-265 range tire when my original skins wear out. I'm not saying they won't fit stock rims, just that they might not perform as well with a better matched width wheel. I know my old Blazer has 35-12.50's on 10" wide rims, and everything looks and feels right. I originally had 36-14.50 bias plies on the same rims, and the center tread always wore out first, regardless of what I ran for pressure. I believe this happened because the tires were sucked in at the center bead -if you will- and it hurt the contact profile of the tire. Would this happen to a steel belted tire? I doubt it, but it's worth thinking about.
