Question diesel starting and running problems

I have a 94 chevy suburban 6.5 ltr diesel, 2500. It cranks and turns over but wont keep running. I have used 3/4s of a tank of fuel with no problems. Last sunday It started and I drove to to church. after church it did the same thing but eventualy it started and ran fine. I stared it once this week for about 5 min with no problems. yesterday and today the problem came back. I opened the fuel cap to put a little fuel cleaner in there and a whole lot of pressure rushed in. But it did not help.

History: Replaced the 2 fuel filters and air filter 2400 miles ago. I am also in new mexico at school which is 3500 ft about sea level (not sure if the altitude is a factor.

Please HELP!

Re: diesel starting and running problems

What do you mean a whole lot of pressure rushed in??If air rushed into the fuel tank as you opened the fuel cap, then the cap has failed.Air must be able to enter the tank as the level in the tank drops. If the vaccum valve on the cap has failed, you would get a rush of air into the tank as you open the fuel cap.Check and see if the fuel tank has not collapsed from the failure of the fuel cap vaccum valve.Check this first.
