Modifying Ignition Timing

Hi guys,

I have an old 323 '87. And I want to modify the ignition timing system, instead of moving/rotating the distribution cap, can I modify it to adjust it electronically ?
I have an idea, I don't know is it possible or not, to delay the signal from the cdi to ignition coils, and change the spark cable sequence.
Here's my explanation, if I delay the signal, it means "retard", but it is for the cylinder that will be combust, but it is "advance" for the next cylinder. so if I switch the spark cable, is it possible ?
And if it's possible, any of you have an idea how to delay it with a very simple device ?

No, you missed my point.

On new car, the ignition timing is set by ecu. My car still using manual ignition timing to set. I would like to put something so it can be adjust electronically.

Do you have any idea ?

Electromotive makes direct ignition systems with provisions for timing adjustments. The units I have seen have a trigger on the front pulley and the distributor is eliminated. Do a Google search on Electromotive Ignition. Here is one example I found with a quick search.

If I understand your comment, you suggest moving the ignition wires 90 degrees clockwise and then move the distributor drive gear two teeth counter-clockwise. Moving the drive gear two teeth will also move the distributor rotor counter-clockwise.

Assume you have set number one cylinder to TDC compression stroke. Assume that the normal position for number 1 cylinder is at 12 o'clock. The rotor should also be at 12 o'clock. After moving the ignition wires 90 degrees clockwise the number one cylinder wire will be at 3 o'clock. The rotor is still at 12 o'clock. The drive gear is moved 2 teeth counter-clockwise. The rotor also moves counter-clockwise. Lets say that two teeth moves the rotor 80 degrees, (I just counted the teeth on a distributor drive, not Mazda, it has 9 teeth). The rotor is now near 10 o'clock, but it needs to be near 3 o'clock for the engine to run. The ignition timing would be almost 180 degrees off.

the ecm will adjust the timing to what it needs anyways.

Ok, No problem, I realize the ecm will adjust as needed. Since we don't know the people posting, it's sometimes difficult to determine if they a serious.
