After rattle when acceperator is released ?

Hi,

I have a Golf 1.4S 5d on a W/2000 plate, and recently had a nasty rattly sound coming from the engine compartment.

I took it to a garage and what sounded like water pump bearings turned out to be the cam belt adjuster, which had 'crumbled' and needed replacement.

However, when i took it to the garage the mechanic mentioned that as well as this obvious rattle, that there was an "after-rattle", i.e. when i release the accelerator, (after stabbing it up to a few thousand revs), there is this rattle that, as the mechanic described as sounds like a loose cover plate somewhere.

Anyway, no loose cover found, cam belt adjuster fitted OK, but after rattle is now clearly evident.

Mechanic, says it sounds like tappets, but can't be as he says there are hydraulic tappets on this model, and that the sound would be evident all of the time, but it does sound like a tapping sound relative to the rev count.

Any ideas what the after-rattle could be ?

Simon.
