Cost of replacing an engine

I am considering buying a 1985 CJ 7. It has 180K miles on the engine and I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how much it would cost to have a rebuilt 6cyl engine put in it.

It has a rebuilt manual transmission in now and the seller is asking $3300 for it.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. This is my first post to this list; can't wait to get my hands on a Jeep!!

Regards.

Moiz

Re: Cost of replacing an engine

Depends what you want. Do you want a mechanic to install an engine for you, if so it will be $3k to $4k easy. If you want a different engine in there then its way more work, more money. What you want to do is rebuild the engine for a Jeep CJ7 and swap it in.

Re: Cost of replacing an engine

Definitiely check out S&S Remanufactoring Co if you're thinking of doing it yourself. They're great guys to deal with. I just bought an engine from them and dropped it in my Wrangler last week and it runs even better now than when I bought it at 2 years old. They've been around over 30 years and they're prices are around $500 cheaper than everywhere else I checked.
