Unhappy squeaky door

i have a '97 lumina and my driver's side door is HORRIBLY squeaky cuz the hinge is super rusted. my friend fixed it last year but now it's bad again cuz it's winter and it practically gives me a headache every time i open it. how can i fix this myself since he's gone to college and can't come home just to fix my door..?

Re: squeaky door

Try buying some motorcycle chain lube. It lasts longer than WD-40 type lubes and doesn't leave a mess like white lithium does.

Re: squeaky door

That's funny! I have the same problem, and I bet if you look real close, yours is for the same reason.

There's a little sprung arm in between the top and bottom hinges, that has the "stops" that hold the door open for you, and there is a little wheel that rides the arm as the door opens and closes. In my case, the wheel is totally siezed, doesn't turn at all, so there is a terrible metal on metal shriek and a loud pop when you open and close it.

Being lazy, I haven't tried to see if I could free the wheel. I just throw a big wad of bearing grease on it, work the door back and forth a few times, and it's fine for 6 or 8 months.
