I have a '94 Mighty Max, 2.4LTR, 5-speed that I love, except for this one problem. For the past 3 years, about every 6-8 months, the friggin' clutch cable and clutch fork have broken. Finally last May, my mechanic put in a new Borg-Warner clutch kit, thinking that the factory one was going and that was what was causing these two simple parts to break. That lasted until just this week, when I went to shift from 2nd to 3rd & I heard a very distinctive SNAP. The parts are cheap ($40.00 from the dealer), but the labor is killing me($200+). I've been told that these two parts breaking is supposed to indicate that there is a bigger problem, however, we can't figure out what it could be. Any suggestions???? Please???

I just bought a 91 d50 2wd 2.4 5spd with 115k mi on it. Exactly as you described, I was going into first in a parking lot and as I was letting out the clutch, I heard a snap and the clutch pedal went to the floor. Not good! The cable didn't snap, but the lever arm on the tranny broke right at the shaft. I was going to repair this myself, but 4" of snow on the ground plus the fact I put my back out, has forced me to send it to a shop. Have you had any luck determining a cause yet? Needless to say I don't want to do this more than once! I was wondering if there is a special procedure and/or lubrication for installing the clutch and throwout bearing. Anyone? thanks.
