Accord doesn't have power left

Hi,

Yesterday i was driving into my steep driveway and my 1993 Accord EX couldn't make it up the driveway. This seemed out of nowhere. I parked it and tried the next day only to find I couldn't pull it out of park (Its an automatic). So I keyed the shift lock and that seemed to work to get it out of park. I drove it around the block up some hills and it is severely lacking in acceleration. We checked the transmission fluid and it was fine.Something is definitely wrong here. Also, i noticed a peculiar smell coming from somewhere (kind of like a burning). Thanks in advance.

Lets me try to understand. Does it feel like the transmission is slipping. Engine speed increases but the car doesn't want to move?

Re: Accord doesn't have power left

If you move the shift lever slightly either way . does it make a difference. If it does, the cable adjustment may be necessary. Otherwise, you may need a new transmission.

the burning smell could be that your clutch is worn out and is slipping causing the shoes to melt a bit

Re: Accord doesn't have power left

Russiankid--automatics have clutches? Not really, they have a torque converter and internal bands. But not clutches per se.

Re: Accord doesn't have power left

In answer to the question, transmissions are expensive, I hope for your sake it is just an adjustment.

Re: Accord doesn't have power left

Expensive as in more than the book value of the car (AFTER it's fixed). There's always the solution of a used transmission if you want to go that route.

You didn't answer the question as to whether the RPMs go up without the car accelerating. That's a key piece of information, and readily available by looking at the rev counter while you're driving. Having said that, the burning smell, while possibly unrelated, is not a good sign. But there ARE other possibilities, depending on your answer.

How long have you had the car? How many mies on it? Do you know its history? How has it been driven?
