egr blockoff

I'm installing egr blockoffs, and I got the bottom 12 off the egr valve but couldnt fit a ratchet in there to get the top one... switched to a 12 wrench and I THOUGHT it was breaking loose but it was just rounding the head.... So how the hell am I supposed to get the bolt out with the fucking rounded head now??
....any advice appreactiated

Re: egr blockoff

hammer on a smaller socket / heat around the bolt.

Why are you blocking EGR off? Doesn't give you any performance boost. The only time EGR does anything is at steady cruise and warm engine idle. At WOT it's completely closed. If anything, blocking it will risk overheating the engine, because it cools the combustion chamber temperature when it gets too high. It worked in '72 when it came out, but it's advanced since then, and won't do anything now.

Re: egr blockoff

The debate is still up in the air over EGR blockoffs. Both sides have valid points, but after reading TONS on teh subject I'm planning on doing it in the future as well. You wont gain power, you wont overheat, but you will keep some carbon out of your engine and intake, and clean out some space behind the plenum. Those 2 facts alone justify it for me.
As far as the bolts, I don't even remember what I used last time I took off my plenum...but I think it was just a combination of socket extensions...because I really didn't have many tools with me at the time. Heat it up and just keep trying, also make sure you are using a 6 sided socket, not a 12 that will just strip the bolt futher. If you do strip it, you will need to get sockets designed for stripped bolts.

Re: egr blockoff

Didn't know there was a debate, i'll just take the word of my teacher who has 40 years experience and custom builds ligenfelter/callaway vette's and gets paid $100/hr to fix what master tech's can't all across the country...i think i can trust his word on it.

I can see how it would decrease carbon build-up in the intake though, idk about the engine, but you're gonna get carbon build-up in there anyway just because we're using fuel full of HC...ok i see why theres a debate now lol

Exactly... plus it eliminates tons of hoses for boost leaks.... but anyway, just got home from work, I'm going to try to heat it up and use some vice grips... if not, off to ACE to try and get some of thoes strip socket things.....

i was reading up on the EGR blockoff on the 3si forum and most of them say it will gain you power and also gas mileage. Anyone else heard this?

Re: egr blockoff

It shouldn't gain you any power...maybe when you're not at WOT...gas mileage I think would decrease because you're filling the comb. chamber with more A/F so more would be used.

Re: egr blockoff

If you search 3si there's a billion threads with diagrams on vac reductions. I swear a new one comes up every 3 days. If you can't log onto 3si, PM me and I'll find you what you need.

Also Twizted if you are interested there are some really good threads on the EGR blockoff pros and cons on 3si. Very informative stuff on all potential results.

When the solinoid bracket on the firewall is removed what should I do with that big plug pointing up and down from the bracket from all the solnoids?? leave it hang unplugged?? because the car won't start now. and it's acting weird.... we also accidently crossed terminals on the battery with somethin else and might have cooked something and don't know if thats the problem or me fucking up the vac reduction? or this plug?
