6.5 Chev Diesel Harmonic Balancer
I have a 6.5 Chev diesel in a Safari Trek motorhome on a P-30 chassis, with only 46,000 miles on it. The required pollution inspection for the state of Arizona requires a full throttle run -- repeated several times. Afterwards, I noticed a strange noise at the front of the engine. I took it to an RV specialist, who determined that the harmonic balancer was bad. Is it possible that the full throttle run could have caused the problem? It pains me that I'll have to pay $1800 to fix something that may have been caused by the inspection. Any ideas?

$100 for parts and $1700 labor?
![]() ![]() Hard to say what caused the balancer to fail, but regardless getting it fixed is really important. Balancer failures on 6.2's and 6.5's rapidly lead to catastrophic crackshaft failures. I'd replace the balancer myself, it's not that hard to do. Rene |
