In need of opinions...

I just acquired an 85 CJ7 that's been sitting in the woods for 3 years.
Other than replacing fluids and battery, checking hoses and belt, anything you would do to get it ready to start?

Re: In need of opinions...

Pull out all the plugs and pour a spoonfull or 2 of ATF down each spark plug hole.

Put a big socket wrench on the crankshaft pully and rotate the engine over slowly by hand a few times. When you are sure it rotates smoothly, spin it with the starter to blow out the excess oil then put the plugs back in.

If its a standard trans, the clutch may be stuck (engaged) even when you press on the pedal, so be careful when starting it.

Spray the carb with carb cleaner and WD40 to make sure all the parts are moving freely. Be sure to replace any rubber fuel line between the fuel pump and the carb.

Try to pre-fill the carb float bowl with an ounce of gas through the bowl vent, if you can. It makes starting easier.

No I didn't. Got everything done that was recommended. It's trying, but as of yet, it hasn't turned over. One more thing to check tomorrow, and I'll try it again. I'll be back for more help no doubt..=)

Re: In need of opinions...

If the battery is good, I'd suspect the starter.

We managed to get it running! Runs crappy, I think a good carb cleaning is in order. I did replace the cylinoid (sp) and now it shuts off when you take the key out..lol It does have a stuck valve, I'll get to that tomorrow. It goes into gear, and the brakes work, so it's not hopeless. I'm no longer looking at parting it out.
