94 taurus cooling fan troubles

94 taurus 3.8lv6

brand new coolant temp sensor

brand new thermostat

all wires connected securely

the cooling fan wont come on....the car hasnt overheated yet but it got to the point where it was warm enough to smell hot coolant mix under the hood..but yet the temp guage didnt show any excessive temps...if i unplug the connector from the temp sensor..the fan takes off no problem so i doubt that its the electric fan itself...the only things that i know of that are in that system are the temp sensor the fan control relay and the fan itself so if i am correct ...that would suggest that my fan control relay at the top of the radiator went south on me ...

any help is appreciated, let me know if im wrong on any of this because i am not perfect and i dont know all

thanks in advance ,dave in n.y.

Re: 94 taurus cooling fan troubles

The fan relay should be closing when you unplug the temp sensor, so since the fan runs when you unplug the sensor, the relay should be fine too. The fan relay is part of the Constant Control Relay Module (CCRM) which controls the low speed fan and high speed fan. Both fan speeds are controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) directly rather than by the coolant temp sensor. The CTS for the cooling fan must be working fine and being registered by the PCM. Are you sure the car is getting warm enough to need the fan to run? Does the cooling fan run if you turn on the A/C?
