P0442 OBDII Code

My 2001 Chevy Impala has this code currently:

P0442 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)

Is there anything that needs to be sealed or replaced?
Please advise.
Thanks!

Make sure the gas cap is tight first.

Re: P0442 OBDII Code

I have that same problem. I tried replacing my cap with a lockable cap and am hoping that helps. As soon as my new fancy scanner arrives ill know!

Re: P0442 OBDII Code

suprising enough, this happens alot. usually its the gas cap, after tightening a few times, if it keeps happening, just get a new one, there cheap, if it keeps happening still, you might need to start checking a few things. the fuel filter is under the car, so it it got hit, or bumped, it maight have causes a small leak, but then you should notice bad milage. but I havent worked with fuel systems extensively, so I dont know how much more help I can be

Re: P0442 OBDII Code

The leak refers to the evap system not holding vacuum, the pcm commands an integrity test of the sealed sytem, not a fuel problem. If not the cap it then gets more difficult to test/diagnose.

Well if your getting 380 miles assuming your average fill up is about 15-16 gallons that translates to about 23-25 miles per gallon. Which isn't all that bad. Let me ask a couple of questions.
1. How many miles are on your vehicle?
2. 3800 or 3400 engine?
3. What, if any modification have you done. CAI, Exhaust, ect.?
4. When was your last tune?
5. What kind of milage were you previously getting per tank?

Try inspecting and cleaning the filler cap gasket and fuel filler neck. Reset the PCM and see what happens. If the code reappears try replacing the cap. If that fails check for craked or split lines on the evap sytem. Also check the charcoal canister, purge valve and check valve. If the check valve is bad your canister may have a lot of liquid fuel in it. Generally caused by over filling the fuel tank.
Hope this helps.

Re: P0442 OBDII Code

Since where on the topic here of OBD codes, i drew up a code p440, Evaporative contol systems malfunction.
Anyone have any idea on what that could be pointing to?
I will add that when I was changing my intake i dropped my AIT and possible broke it. I never knew if i was been given a code for that for the reason of my check engine light already being on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
