Poll - Metro peculiarities - Body & Interior

My '93 Metro has one BAD problem - the door windows!

I just had a used window crank system (regulator) from
the wrecking yard put in by a body shop. It was almost new
as regards use.

Yet it is already (3 months later) acting up. Clacking and
grinding... Crap! They are weak and flimsy pieces of junk...

Also the windows have no seal since they just sit up against the
rubber seal. So at high speed they howl because the wind sucks
them away from the seal.

How bad is THAT! Crud design.

I have some damned rattle in the back right side that I CANNOT identify!

No idea what it is. I'm going to have to tear into the plastic inside
body to find what is loose or rattling around in there.

The horn cover won't stay on. The little forked prongs are worn out.
I have no idea how to fix that except maybe put some small spring
from the steering nut to the cover. How I'll get it hooked up is
anybody's guess!

Re: Poll - Metro peculiarities - Body & Interior

I paid $1,100 for this car.

I expect the car window to work.
I expect the regulator to be stronger than a tin can lid....

When someone paid $10,000 new, did the windows crap out after
six months?

I patrolled the junk yards a while back. Pretty lean pickings.

Well, I'm sorry dude, but not everyone is rich enough to buy a mercedes, hummer, dodge ram, etc. To tell you the truth...I WISH I had $5000 to spend on a car. At the moment I'm sitting here with a 92 Geo Metro sitting in my driveway and it won't start. And I don't have the money to have it worked on right now. Don't know when I will either. I spent $1300 on this car and wish to God I hadn't. But, some of us have to take what we can get and not act so SPOILED about it.

they are cheap regulators. if you grease everything up on them real good and spray the rubber channel they sit in real good with silicone lubricant they will work good for about 6 months, if they start getting stiff spray the rubber track again, silicone spray seems to work the best. as for your rattle check the rar seat belt, thats what rear rattle was in mine, piece inside retractor was loose and rattleing. can also make sure jack, spare tire and tools are tight under rear cover

Yep it a poor design, but you know what? I have found a way to deal with it.

You see you are mistaken, the glass does not rest against the rubber seal, there is a groove for the glass to sink into. Unfortunately it needs your help to properly seat.

1. Roll up the glass until the egdes can rest on the rubber seal.
2. With on hand holding the frame use your fingers to press the glass into the groove whilst crank the window with your other hand.
3. Once th glass enters the groove and tension is felt on the crank, take your hands and grab the glass from both sides (Inside and outside) and pull the glass towards the back of the car. It should slide about 1/3 inch.
4. Crank up somemore but dont use too much force.

Bam! Glass is sealed and howling is gone. I am working on a way to make it better, but I am afraid I will just have to accept the flaw.

Hey man! Muchicimus gratitudenuses... (my street Spanglish)

I shall endeavor to try what you suggest.

I replaced my driver's side 'regulator' and it is ALREADY starting to
fail. I will GREASE it and use silicone on the rubber also.

Re: Poll - Metro peculiarities - Body & Interior

the reason it tips back is the short track that one arm of the regulator rides on tends to spread and it causes the window to tip. if you remove it and squeeze it back to normal shape it will help window go up straight, also when you bot it back in leave the 2 bolts a little loose and tip widow back as far as it will go then tighten screw
