Descreened my MAF
I was detailing (cleaning) my truck and had some time on my hands and decided i'd descreen the MAF. Very simple mod, and despite what others have said, there's was a small gain IMO. Has anyone else tried this mod?
Cool pic looking into the K&N

Re: Descreened my MAF
Removing the screen may affect your maf inputs to the pcm as most screens are designed to straighten out are flow over the sensor wire for more accurate air flow inputs. Time will tell if this will harm or improve your perforamnce.

Re: Descreened my MAF
If it is the case that the screen needs to be there to straighten out the air flow for a more accurate reading, then why do aftermarket MAF's not have the screen ?

Re: Descreened my MAF
I did this to mine and it started pinging like shit. I think it's leaning the air'fuel mixture so I put my screen back in. I felt absolutely no gain at all.Not worth the time IMO.

Re: Descreened my MAF
I was thinking of removing the secren on mine but i did about 2 hrs worth of reading last night in various forums just by doing a google search on "descreened maf" and there were more against this mod than were for it. Alot said they had problems after, some even said they had stuff sucked into their engine ,although how something of any size big enough to harm the engine can get past the air filter is beyond me. On one forum i read that they have a "Looking for things" forum or something like that and they said that alot of people are looking for the factory maf's WITH the screen still in them. Some people say there was a noticeable gain but more say there was no noticeable gain at all. Not worth it imo, just my $0.02

Re: Descreened my MAF
I descreened mine about a year and a half ago and can't tell a difference...I read that is was to keep chunks of stuff off of the sensor.

It's never actually been proven to help or hurt the truck. I've had mine out since '01 and no problems that I can tell.
